BIO

s a young graduate, Goh was contemplating a career in Material Sciences when a chance foray into teaching turned her on her heel towards an entirely new direction. Little did she realise at that time, that the 180 departure would pave the way for her life-long journey as an educator.

As a young teacher, Goh was desperate for a solution to help her enhance the attention and focus of her students. She scoured the internet and tried numerous methodologies but when she stumbled upon Brain Gym®; Goh innately knew that the movement-based learning programme would be the “break through” solution that would help people of all ages turn their learning challenges into successes.

Excited by the prospect of a few simple movements that helped with equilibrium and perceptual skills, Goh was keen to use the Brain Gym® methodology to positively impact fine-motor and academic skills. However, Brain Gym® was at its infancy in the early 1990’s and self-help was an unheard of concept in Malaysia. Goh knew that it would be an uphill battle to conquer these challenges but the optimist in her was fired up like never before.

Goh then took to equipping herself with the knowledge and skills in Brain Gym®. She attended training sessions in Malaysia, regionally and even flew to Ventura, California, USA to train with Brain Gym ® founder Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D. In 2003, she became a certified Brain Gym ® Instructor & Consultant with the Educational Kinesiology Foundation, USA.

She then began the arduous task of adopting Brain Gym® techniques into a Malaysian context. This led her to literally knock on doors, approaching numerous kindergartens in the Klang Valley until she finally got a break with one that allowed her to work with the children. What started as a thirty minute session, soon developed into daily sessions and before long she was training teachers and educating parents on the Brain Gym® concept. It was soon to become apparent that the Brain Gym® exercises were extremely useful in helping young children become smarter and sharper, thus boosting confidence levels and improving self-esteem.

Goh then started and settled into family life. This chapter became another cornerstone because it gave her a personal opportunity to apply what she knew on her three children. It was also during this time that Goh pursued her Masters, focusing on empirical data to support the effectiveness of the Brain Gym® methodology.

Her findings revealed that the application of Brain Gym® on an experimental group of children over a three month period had improved their performance by 97 percent. These findings lay the impetus for her to engage with professionals from fields outside of education; and to expand the Brain Gym® influence into scopes such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, special needs, geriatric care and Alzheimer’s.

Today, Brain Gym and Goh Siew Siew are synonymous in Malaysia. Her training and speaking engagements are very much sought after, and Goh’s gentle but down-to-earth approach is what keeps her real, making her sessions up close and personal.

Two decades on, Goh continues to be moved by the predicaments faced by parents and teachers; inspiring her on a life mission to help families and individuals achieve the “break through moment” that leads to a life that is balanced and fulfilling; always resolute that “the rainbow is just around the corner”.
